    Speaker: Dr. Hao Yang, Northwestern University
    Title: “Biological Radical initiation by Radical SAM Enzymes”

    Abstract:  Radical SAM(RS) enzymes utilize cofactor [4Fe-4S] cluster and SAM to generate 5’-dAdo• radical for initiating the broadest range of radical chemistry in biology. This talk will detail our recent work in illustrating the radical initiation mechanism of RS enzymes through capturing reactive intermediates. We firstly discovered that photoinduced electron transfer from [4Fe-4S]1+ to SAM in one RS enzyme PFL-AE leads to the reductive S-C5’ bond cleavage, which trapped and characterized 5’-dAdo• that had remained elusive for the last half century. Much to our surprise, the photoinduced electron transfer within the [4Fe-4S]1+/SAM complex in another RS enzyme HydG reductively cleaves the S-CH3 bond of SAM, a wrong bond cleavage liberating •CH3, which has not been found in nature. Finally, our rapid freeze quench by mixing RS enzymes with their substrates trapped a catalytic intermediate W that is characterized with 5’-C covalently bonding to the unique iron of [4Fe-4S]3+, formally an organometallic bond. The trapping and characterization of including 5′-dAdo•, •CH3 and W within RS enzymes paradigm shifted our understanding about how RS enzymes tame the broadest radical chemistry in biology

     

    The Chemistry and Biochemistry Departmental Seminar Series covers a broad range of fields in the Chemical and Biochemical Sciences. In past seminars, scientists from Academia, Government, and Industry have presented their most recent discoveries and contributions in their respective areas. This Seminar Series offers students and faculty the opportunity to interact directly with other leaders in their specializations and to gain a good overview of the entire range of fields in Chemistry and Biochemistry.

    Abstract: Christian has had a lifelong passion for both wildlife and theater,  and in recent years, he's combined those skillsets into a blossoming career in science communication. In his presentation, Christian describes the amazing experiences he's had so far—which include making a documentary about an endangered snake in Georgia, traveling to lowland rainforests, and engaging in local science communication right here in metro Atlanta. It covers a wide range of topics related to science communication, and it includes within it some recommendations for how us scientists can better engage with the public!

    Title: “Random versions of FPUT lattice”
    Abstract: The FPUT lattice is one of the big models for nonlinear dispersive waves. It possesses solitary waves which are asymptotically stable and long waves are known to be well-approximated by KdV equations. But what if the coefficients are random? It turns out that all bets are off and waves disintegrate pretty rapidly...unless the randomness is sort of special (but not too special!).

     

    The Analysis and Applied Mathematics (AAM) Seminar is intended for Kennesaw State faculty working in the various areas of analysis and applied mathematics to get together to discuss their current work or related questions. Seminars often involve advanced mathematical knowledge. However, the seminars are open to anyone who is interested in attending.

    Title: “Radiating Solitary Waves”

    Abstract: In a surprisingly large number of nonlinear dispersive systems, there is a dynamic called a "radiating solitary wave."  This a wave that moves along and constantly emits a little oscillatory tail in its wake.  The wake slowly drains all the energy from main wave.  But this scenario isn't well understood analytically.  So I came up with a pretty simple model for this that, shockingly, can be solved using (relatively elementary) Laplace transform techniques.

     

    This seminar will be held in-person and virtually via Zoom.

Her presentation gives some great examples of how well-designed science can used in making management decisions, linking theory with practice. I highly recommend to students who are interested in ecology, conservation, and wildlife management.

    Speaker: Dr. Katy Hosbein, Middle Tennessee State University
    Title: “Explorations into science identity development within first-generation undergraduate students in General Chemistry and Biology”

    Abstract:  Science identity, as defined by James Paul Gee, is “being recognized as a certain ‘kind of person’ in a given context.” There is evidence to support that science and discipline-specific identities impact students’ persistence in STEM and is especially impactful to the persistence of students with marginalized identities. While there are descriptions of science identity within the literature, the theoretical framework remains convoluted. Results from two projects will be presented. The first expanded on an existing physics identity framework to operationalize the framework to science and chemistry and to situate it within existing psychological constructs. The psychological constructs and updated science and chemistry identity framework will be discussed. The second project explores how first-generation students within a General Chemistry or Biology course define and describe science identity. Preliminary results will be discussed. Outcomes from this project will help to inform how to create learning environments that support meaningful science identity development.

    Title: “Ion acoustic wave dynamics in a two-fluid plasma”

    Abstract: We investigate the dynamics of ions and electrons within a plasma using a collisionless "Euler-Poisson'' system. We show this system is governed by the dynamics of the KdV equation in the long-wavelength limit and possesses solitary wave solutions.

Math majors are particularly sought after in finance, technology, and data science. Yet, what does the job market landscape truly involve? Which specific skill sets are in high demand? How can we determine if we are well prepared for the challenges of job hunting? It's vital to delve into the specifics of each sector, tailor skill development accordingly, and seek insights for a confident and effective entry into the job market.


    Bio: Dr. Xingwang Chen has been working in the Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU) since July 2022, where he leads a team of data scientists and financial risk analysts to develop underwriting models for credit card and consumer loan, as well as validate model performance across different portfolios within NFCU. Before joining NFCU, Dr. Chen had worked at Equifax (EFX) for 6 years, where he started as a senior data scientist in the model risk management, later promoted as director for banking and lending analytics, finally led the global capability team in EFX. Prior to EFX, he taught mathematics and statistics in Savannah State University for 6 years. Dr. Chen received his Ph.D degree in computational and applied mathematics from Old Dominion University.

     

    The Applied Mathematics in Industry Seminar (AMIS) series is primarily focused on highlighting how mathematics is used in various different careers and is geared toward undergraduates. Seminars typically require little or no advanced mathematical knowledge and are open to anyone.

    Title: “Hecke algebra character evaluation and graph coloring”
    Abstract: If $w$ in the symmetric group $S_n$ avoids the patterns $3412$ and $4231$, then we may graphically represent the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element $\widetilde C_w(1) \in \mathbb Z[S_n]$ by a poset $P = P(w)$ or a graph $G = G(w)$.  We may then compute the evaluations of certain $Z[S_n]$-characters at $\widetilde C_w(1)$ by decomposing $P$ into chains or by coloring $G$. 

     

    These results hold also for a certain q-deformation $H_n(q)$ of $Z[S_n]$ called the Hecke algebra. It, too, has a Kazhdan-Lusztig basis whose elements $\widetilde C_w(q)$ may be  represented by the poset and graph above. We will show how to use the same chain decompositions and colorings above to evaluate $H_n(q)$-characters at $\widetilde C_w(q)$.

    Title: “Extreme covering systems”
    Abstract: A distinct covering system is a finite set of congruences with moduli distinct positive integers, such that every integer satisfies at least one of the congruences. The use of distinct covering systems in number theory was introduced by Paul Erdos in the 1950s.

    In the first part of the talk we consider two problems. Problem 1: If the least modulus m of a distinct covering system is fixed, how small can be its largest modulus? Problem 2: If the least modulus m of a distinct covering system is fixed, how small can be the least common multiple of all moduli?
     

    In 1971, Krukenberg solved Problem 1 when m=2 and m=3 and Problem 2 when m=2. In a joint work with Jack Dalton we extended Krukenburg's work to the cases m=4 in Problem 1 and m=3 and m=4 in Problem 2.
     

    In the second part of the talk we discuss the distortion method introduced by Balister, Bollobas, Morris, Sahasrabudhe, and Tiba, which allowed them to show that the least modulus of any distinct covering system does not exceed $616000$ . We will consider several applications of the method and will finish with a number of open problems.

    Abstract: In this seminar, we consider classes of singular elliptic problems with the zero Dirichlet boundary condition. Through a historical lens, we trace the evolution of our understanding regarding the regularity, existence, and behavior of positive solutions, with a specific emphasis on their behavior at the boundary, of such problems. Additionally, recent research findings will be examined, particularly focusing on existence and uniqueness results when the singularity at the origin is coupled with sublinear growth at infinity.
