    Speaker: Dr. Mark Skandera, Lehigh University
    Title: “Hecke algebra character evaluation and graph coloring”
    Abstract: If $w$ in the symmetric group $S_n$ avoids the patterns $3412$ and $4231$, then we may graphically represent the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element $\widetilde C_w(1) \in \mathbb Z[S_n]$ by a poset $P = P(w)$ or a graph $G = G(w)$.  We may then compute the evaluations of certain $Z[S_n]$-characters at $\widetilde C_w(1)$ by decomposing $P$ into chains or by coloring $G$. 

     

    These results hold also for a certain q-deformation $H_n(q)$ of $Z[S_n]$ called the Hecke algebra. It, too, has a Kazhdan-Lusztig basis whose elements $\widetilde C_w(q)$ may be  represented by the poset and graph above. We will show how to use the same chain decompositions and colorings above to evaluate $H_n(q)$-characters at $\widetilde C_w(q)$.

     

    The Discrete Math Seminar (DMS) is intended for Kennesaw State faculty working in the various areas of algebra, number theory, and discrete mathematics to get together to discuss their current work or related questions.     Speaker: Dr. Ognian Trifonov, University of South Carolina
    Title: “Extreme covering systems”
    Abstract: A distinct covering system is a finite set of congruences with moduli distinct positive integers, such that every integer satisfies at least one of the congruences. The use of distinct covering systems in number theory was introduced by Paul Erdos in the 1950s.

    In the first part of the talk we consider two problems. Problem 1: If the least modulus m of a distinct covering system is fixed, how small can be its largest modulus? Problem 2: If the least modulus m of a distinct covering system is fixed, how small can be the least common multiple of all moduli?
     

    In 1971, Krukenberg solved Problem 1 when m=2 and m=3 and Problem 2 when m=2. In a joint work with Jack Dalton we extended Krukenburg's work to the cases m=4 in Problem 1 and m=3 and m=4 in Problem 2.
     

    In the second part of the talk we discuss the distortion method introduced by Balister, Bollobas, Morris, Sahasrabudhe, and Tiba, which allowed them to show that the least modulus of any distinct covering system does not exceed $616000$ . We will consider several applications of the method and will finish with a number of open problems.

    Title: “Positive solutions of singular problems”

    Abstract: In this seminar, we consider classes of singular elliptic problems with the zero Dirichlet boundary condition. Through a historical lens, we trace the evolution of our understanding regarding the regularity, existence, and behavior of positive solutions, with a specific emphasis on their behavior at the boundary, of such problems. Additionally, recent research findings will be examined, particularly focusing on existence and uniqueness results when the singularity at the origin is coupled with sublinear growth at infinity.

    Title: “Photography for science communication & conservation”
    Abstract: Anton is a multi-talented biologist and world-class wildlife photographer, and he currently works as an environmental consultant and freelance photojournalist in California. His focus is on pressing and urgent conservation issues, and his work has been published in some of the most prestigious photography outlets. In the talk, Anton teaches us a lot about conservation and natural history, his creative process of photography, and practical business advice for turning a passion into a career.

    Title: “Graphs with 2|G|-2 Edges are a (K4,1)-Cockade or have a K2,3 Minor”
    Abstract: Cockades are recursively defined graphs joined on cliques.  Graph minors are obtained through contraction and deletion.  In this presentation, we will discuss these structures precisely and explore why they appear in graphs with sufficient edges.

    Title: “Understanding the adsorption and reactivity of subsurface oxygen within a silver surface”

    Abstract: Akin to the pressure gap between laboratory surface-science experiments performed under ultrahigh vacuum and industrial surface chemistry conducted under high gas pressures, theoretical models of gas-surface interactions are often developed for low gas concentrations yet applied to surface phenomena that occur under high gas concentrations. The primary reason for this discrepancy is the steep cost of computing chemical properties at high surface concentrations (or coverages) of the gas using electronic structure methods. To address this challenge and to study the percolation of gases just beneath the surface, i.e., into the subsurface, at high coverages, we have developed lattice-gas adsorption models that include surface as well as subsurface sites in a crystalline solid and are fully parameterized using density functional theory (DFT). We have applied the models to study the adsorption of atomic oxygen on the Ag(111) surface, first as functions of coverage and temperature using canonical Monte Carlo simulations, and next as functions of pressure and temperature using grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The simulations show the conditions under which subsurface adsorption occurs and provide insight into how subsurface adsorbates might participate in catalytic partial oxidation on silver surfaces. Overall, the lattice-gas adsorption model offers a simple and insightful theoretical framework to explore the competition between surface and subsurface adsorption in gas-surface systems.

     

    The Chemistry and Biochemistry Departmental Seminar Series covers a broad range of fields in the Chemical and Biochemical Sciences. In past seminars, scientists from Academia, Government, and Industry have presented their most recent discoveries and contributions in their respective areas. This Seminar Series offers students and faculty the opportunity to interact directly with other leaders in their specializations and to gain a good overview of the entire range of fields in Chemistry and Biochemistry.
